How to Rig A Strike Assist

General overview

Model Selection Chart

Choose the Strike Assist model based on lure type and trolling speed. This can be done by using the chart above or by buying both, attaching the lure and leader to the Strike Assist and putting it underwater next to the boat at trolling speed.

Start with model 001 and if there is still at least 2 inches of extension room left, use model 001. If not, repeat this procedure with model 002 to.

Using a Strike Assist

Do not put anything but the leader and lure/bait "downstream" of the Strike Assist (see "How to Rig"

  1. A common leader length for spoons is 5 ft but leaders as long as 20 ft have been used behind divers.
  2. When used behind rotators or flashers, adjust the leader length to optimize the presentation based on your setup and trolling speed.

How to Rig a Strike Assist

Basic Rig

This is an example of the simplest way to  rig a Strike Assist. The line from the rod is attached to the front of the Strike Assist and a leader made of fishing line is used to connect the ball bearing swivel on the back of the Strike Assist to the lure or bait. Common leader lengths range from 3-25 ft, depending on the setup.

    Ideal Lure/Bait Rigs

    Spoons

    Meat Rigs and Cut/Whole Bait

    Spin-N-Glows/Whirlygigs

Spoons of all sizes work well when used with a Strike Assist.

    Spin-N-Glows/Whirlygigs

    Meat Rigs and Cut/Whole Bait

    Spin-N-Glows/Whirlygigs

Both Spin-n-Glows and Whirlygigs work well when used with a Strike Assist.

    Meat Rigs and Cut/Whole Bait

    Meat Rigs and Cut/Whole Bait

    Meat Rigs and Cut/Whole Bait

Meat rigs and cut/whole bait work well with a Strike Assist. Teasers can be used on the leader but will add additional drag which will reduce (but not eliminate) extension at strike.

    In-line Spinners

    Crawler Harnesses (Some)

    Meat Rigs and Cut/Whole Bait

In-line spinners work well when used with a Strike Assist.

    Crawler Harnesses (Some)

    Crawler Harnesses (Some)

    Crawler Harnesses (Some)

Some anglers have had good success using traditional cralwer harnesses behind a Strike Assist at trolling speeds of 2 mph and less.

    Trolling Flies/Squids*

    Crawler Harnesses (Some)

    Crawler Harnesses (Some)

Trolling flies and squids work well with a Strike Assist. Teasers can be used on the leader but will add additional drag which will reduce (but not eliminate) extension at strike.

    Cowbell Rigs

Cowbell rigs work well with a Strike Assist.

    Triangle Flashers

Triangle flasher rigs work well with Strike Assist.

    Rotators (Some)

    Short Cranks and Plugs

While fish have been caught on short leaders behind rotators, the current recommendation is that Strike Assists only be used when the leader length is at least 30in.

    Short Cranks and Plugs

    Short Cranks and Plugs

    Short Cranks and Plugs

Strike Assist works well with crankbaits and plugs that are 4 in or less.

Longer plugs may also work well depending on the size of the fish (bigger fish create more suction) and feeding behavior (head vs tail striking).
