Yes, Strike Assist has been designed for use in saltwater. All components are corrosion resistant including plastic and stainless steel.
The most common leader length is 5-6 ft but leaders from 3-30 ft can be used. For example, most spoons/crankbaits/spinners/etc will likely us a leader of 5-6 ft since it makes storage and netting easier. When fishing with Spin-n-Glows/meat rigs/etc, a 3-4 ft leader is more common. Anglers may also want to use extra long leaders (15-25 ft) when fishing with divers.
There is no need to take the Strike Assist off the line unless you will not be using them again for an extended period of time. If the spring is left in the fully stretched position for weeks/months at a time it will eventually fatigue or stretch, especially in hot temperatures.
Best practice would be to store in a cool, dry place when not in use for extended periods. Sunlight contains UV light that degrades all plastics.
